BIRDS HAVE SENSITIVE RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS

Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems, so you’ll have to reevaluate what you can and can’t keep in your home. Some of the items that might affect your Bird’s breathing include scented candles, air fresheners, certain cleaning supplies, oils, and even cookware.

According to Pet Hospitals of Hawaii, one item that should be avoided is cookware with nonstick coating. Nonstick pots and pans are able to emit dangerous fumes at certain temperatures; these shouldn’t be used in the same house as a Bird. Inhalation of these fumes or other chemicals can result in illness, aggravation of existing health issues, or even sudden death.

Cigarette smoking is also a big no-no in any house with a Bird. If you absolutely can’t give up smoking, make sure you smoke outside and away from your Bird. Wash your hands and change your clothes if you can, because secondhand smoke can affect your Bird’s well-being, too.
