Mom, son die as truck slams into house in Negros town

BACOLOD City - A mother and her son died when a 10wheel truck crashed into their house in Barangay Antipolo, Pontevedra, Negros Occidental yesterday.

Police identified the victims as Ermie Cordero, 58, and her son Jr Cordero, 30.

Police Cpl. Genesis Beñas, traffic investigator of Pontevedra Municipal Police Station, said the truck driven by Henry Salgado, 46, of Binalbagan town, was on its way to Pontevedra town proper, when the driver failed to notice the curve part of the road, causing the vehicle to hit the railings at the roadside and slammed into the house of the Corderos, which was made of concrete and light materials.

Beñas said the casualties were sleeping inside their bedroom when the accident occurred around 1:30 a.m.

Jr died on the spot while Ermie passed away in a hospital later that day.

Beñas said that it took four hours for the rescuers to remove the victims from the site.

Beñas said that Ermie’s 12-yearold daughter, who was sleeping in another room, suffered only minor injuries.

Ermie’s husband was not at home when the accident happened.

Meanwhile, Beñas said that Salgado is confined in a hospital here a er suffering from injuries, while his eight-year-old son sustained minor injuries and was already turned over to the custody of his mother.

In September last year, the Corderos’ survived when a truck overshot the road, damaging their house and killing their dog, a German Shepherd.
