Pacquiao: No presidential posturings
By MARIO B. CASAYURAN
Senator Emmanuel D. Pacquiao on Monday, May 3, denied his sending letters to US President Biden and Chinese ambassador to the Philippines amounted to presidential posturing. Pacquiao sent out a letter to Biden with regards to the request to expedite at least half of the 20 million Moderna COVID-19 vaccines that the Philippines ordered. The letter was coursed through the Philippine embassy. In response, the US Ambassador to the Philippines John Law acknowledged the senator’s letter to US President Biden, but did not make any promises in terms of the request. In a Zoom press briefing for Senate reporters, Pacquiao stated that he and Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez talked about his letter. Pacquiao also wrote a letter to ChiWhen na through Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines, Huang Xilian, where he expressed his growing concern on the continued stay of 220 Chinese vessels in Julian Felipe Reef in the West Philippine Sea. Pacquiao made it clear that he just aims to claim what is rightfully ours. When asked about posturing himself as a president, Pacquiao replied “Alam niyo, hindi dapat politika ang pinaguusapan ngayon dahil ang damidami ng problema sa bansa natin (We should not be discussing politics while the country has many problems).” Because of him discussing international issues and trying to contact world leaders, Pacquiao was called out by his critics for positioning himself as the next president. “Yung effort ko hindi na dapat papaalam sa taong bayan na susulat ako (I need not get approval of the people before I write a letter). Ang gusto ko makatulong talaga sa ating bansa (I simply want to help our country),” he explained. asked about his plan to run for the presidency, Pacquiao said: “Running for the position is always up to and ’anointed by God.” “Ang pagiging presidente o pagtakbo, that is anointed by God (The presidency is anointed by God). Kung sino man ilalagay diyan sa posisiyong ‘yan, iyon ang kagustuhan ng Panginoon (Whoever is placed there, it is the Lord’s choice),” he added. “Kung ako ang ilalagay ng Panginoon diyan, gagampanan ko ang trabaho ko (I will do my job if God grants me the presidency). Kung ako man ang ilalagay ng Panginoon diyan, maniwala kayo sa akin, tapos na ang maliligayang araw ng mga kawatan diyan sa gobyerno. Iyan ang itaga sa bato ng mga kawatan diyan (If God puts me there, believe me, the days of the corrupt in the country are numbered. That will be etched in stone,” he stressed.
