Eleazar is next PNP chief – Año

By AARON B. RECUENCO

Police Lt. Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar is the next chief of the 220,000-strong Philippine National Police (PNP), Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año confirmed on Wednesday, May 5.

Eleazar, the current number two man of the PNP being the PNP deputy chief for Administration, is set to replace his mistah Gen. Debold Sinas who is set to retire on May 8, Saturday.

Both Eleazar and Sinas are members of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Hinirang Class of 1987.

Año said that President Duterte has already approved the appointment of Eleazar, based on the recommendation of the National Police Commission (Napolcom) which he heads. He had earlier disclosed that he only recommended one PNP senior official in the Napolcom resolution.

“I welcome the appointment of PLt. Gen. Eleazer who is very qualified for the job. Through a Napolcom resolution, Eleazar was recommended to be the next Chief PNP based on seniority, merit, service reputation and competence to lead the Police Force,” said Año in a text message to reporters.

“I expect PLt. Gen. Eleazar to lead the PNP organization to greater heights amidst the pandemic during these challenging times,” he added.

Año said the approval of the appointment of Eleazar comes with the promotion to the next star rank, Police General. But Eleazar would only take the four-star rank once Sinas retires on May 8.
