Call SMB’s Ross ‘The Graduate’

By JONAS TERRADO

Chris Ross completed some unfinished business after completing his collegiate studies at Marshall University.

The San Miguel Beermen defensive wizard beamed with pride after graduating with a degree in Recents Bachelor of Arts during the virtual commencement exercises of the university located in Huntington, West Virginia.

“Better late than never,” the 36-year-old Ross said on his Instagram post. “It was a long time coming but I used quarantine as a time to better myself and fishing some things that I didn’t get to finish when I was first presented with the situation.

“I wish I was able to go back to campus and walk the stage but unfortunately I wasn’t. I’m proud and giving myself a pat on the back for never giving up on myself and finally getting it done! I’m officially a college graduate!”

Ross transferred to Marshall in 2005 for the final two seasons of his US NCAA eligibility where he averaged 6.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals in 60 games for the Thundering Herd.

He then moved to Manila, first by playing for Pharex in the defunct Philippine Basketball League in 2009 before being drafted by Coca-Cola as the fourth overall pick of the PBA Draft that same year.

Ross also had stops in Sta. Lucia and Meralco before becoming the instrumental figure in San Miguel’s run to eight championships in 16 conferences between 2005 to 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic, however, gave Ross the chance to go back to school.

“Better late than never,” he said.
