Carrion eyes more Filipino gymnasts in 2024 Olympics

The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) is also looking at its two promising rhythmic gymnasts to conquer major international tournaments in the future.

GAP President Cynthia Carrion said Daniela Dela Pisa and Breanna Labadan have been training in Hungary for quite some time now to sharpen their skills, hoping that they would soon achieve the same feat of artistic gymnastics world champion Carlos Yulo.

“We also have other gymnasts to look forward to, not only Caloy (Yulo),” Carrion said in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Online Forum.

Dela Pisa, an 17-year-old cancer survivor, made heads turn at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila after winning the gold medal in hoop event, as well as two bronzes in ball and clubs.

She has been dominating local tournaments like the Palarong Pambansa and Batang Pinoy.

Labadan, 15, has also been a Palarong Pambansa and Batang Pinoy standout and has competed in the 2019 FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Early this year, Dela Pisa and Labadan collected three gold and three silver medals in the 2021 Tavazsi Kupa Budapest tournament in Hungary.

Carrion said her dream is to have multiple gymnasts qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics to sustain the strong program of the association that has produced a world champion like Yulo.

Yulo recently clinched his second world championship title in Kitakyushu, Japan by ruling the vault event while also snagging silver in parallel bars.
