Soldier, NPA killed in Northern Samar clash

TACLOBAN CITY — A soldier and a New People’s Army rebel were killed in an encounter in Barangay Geparayan de Turag, Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar, on Monday, March 20.

Col. Efren Morados, 803rd Infantry Brigade commander, said troops were responding to a tip from a concerned civilian regarding seven NPA rebels from the Front Committee 1 (FC1), Sub-Regional Committee (SRC) Emporium, Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) extorting in their barangay.

A 20-minute gunfight ensued after which the communist guerrillas scampered to different directions.

The 4th Scout Ranger "Masigasig" Battalion found the body of an unidentified NPA rebel and an M16 rifle after the skirmish.

Infantry Division chief, condoled with the family and friends of the fallen soldier – Private Modesto G. Lutob.

"His heroism and gallantry in action in serving the people of Northern Samar to support the attainment of lasting peace and development should never be forgotten," Ligayo added.

Northern Samar is said to be the last bastion of the NPA and the focus area of the 803rd IB in its intensified military operation.
