“Ifeel like I’m God’s gift to women”, Nico said to me the first time we met years ago. “Wow how conceited!” I said to him, laughing in disbelief. Who would have thought that we’d actually become best of friends and now, husband and wife?

Ours is not a story like that of Romeo and Juliet’s, it’s not the exciting, ‘you and me against the world’ type. We’ve always been the chill, relaxed and no frills, low maintenance couple who started out as friends. We went to the same school in college, even used the same classrooms, had a lot of common friends, but we only met when one of our friends invited us to an out of town trip to Quezon. We’ve been inseparable ever since, and 13 years later, we’re married!

Mid-2021, I let go of all my worries and anxiety, and decided to also let go of the things that I couldn’t control. I had my mind set on what’s important—nico and I getting married, in front of God, and in front of our loved ones, no matter how small or how big the wedding was going to be. I continued with wedding planning, and was prepared not only with plan A, but with plan B, plan C, and Plan D as well. I always prayed and wished every 11:11 for God to bless us with the wedding that He wants for us.

Lo and behold, covid-19 cases declined come December. Although not all our family and friends were able to come to our wedding, and we cut our original guest list in half, we were still able to celebrate this beautiful milestone with people most special to us.

Our wedding’s theme was Modern Filipiniana. As a couple, we’ve always been drawn to Filipino designs and materials like rattan and solihiya, and when we were searching for pegs, we got really drawn to these types of design and texture. I was so happy that our event stylist was able to come up with backdrops that incorporated these—we had big solihiya panels that complimented our solihiya couch.

Since I wanted everything to have meaning, I made sure that my wedding ring had 9 diamonds, which represented the number of years after Nico and I became bf/gf until Nico proposed, and our special number is 9,

since we became bf/gf on September 29, 2009 (09/29/09). I put a memory charm with a picture of my Mom on my bridal bouquet so that I’m with her the entire time, from preps to reception. I also really felt as if she was with me as I walked down the aisle during the ceremony. The pink flowers on our wedding cake—it was a happy accident, I originally wanted all white/ nude flowers. But when I saw our cake had pink flowers, I thought of my Mom who passed away when I was young—she loved pink flowers!

One of the wedding highlights was having our traditional flash mobs every wedding, Nico has always been a part of it even when we were still bf/gf. It was so surreal for me to see him participating in a flash mob during our wedding, with my family and all our close friends.

Our wedding may be typical for some, or not the most extravagant, but it is mine and Nico’s, and I would never change any bit of it.
